Can Anyone Help Me Understand the MLS Salary Cap?
By: Clint | June 19th, 2007My tiny little mind gets smooshed when I see all these rumors about the Galaxy getting [insert fading star here] and I see that Landy and Becks alone are like triple the salary cap. I think there are two ‘exception’ spots for a team, right? Does the rest of the team’s combined base salaries have to sum up to less than the team’s salary cap? Does any of the exception pay get applied to the cap? If a team is already at the cap, does that mean they cannot use their exception spaces? And, most importantly, why on earth do the Galaxy get linked with ten trillion big names while the Rapids can’t even get one? I calculated the Rapids team salary for players to be 2,322,113.75. Is this close to the cap? Do we have to lose Keel if we want to sign Kaka or David Villa? I’m not sure I’m prepared to make that kind of a sacrifice.

The 18 senior roster players have to fit the cap guidelines, this excludes the ridiculously low dev players (12k or 17k) and generation Addidas signings. Each team can sign one player who the bulk of their salary does not apply to the cap provided they pick up the bill unlike with the other players who are payed by the league. A team can acquire a second exception to the cap from another team via trade, thus far the only such trade has been Guevarra to Chivas for RBNY’s second. The first DP counts 400k to the cap and the second 325k. Players who had cap defying salaries from contracts signed previous to the new DP rule being instated do not need a DP spot this year but will next year. The cap is rumored to be somewhere between 2mil and 2.5 mil. Sometimes teams are picking up a portion from a player who has been traded away like RSL and Mathis.
In short: The Galaxy need either a) the rules rewritten b)to make a trade and only sign the player for half a season or c)the international star signing for below 325k to get a second international star. They also still need to make a trade to retain Donovan next year provided the league doesn’t find a way to help thme there. The Rapids would need to have 400k below the cap to sign one.

I heard Shep Messing is spreading rumors that we’re trading Landycakes to free up salary space. Alexi says it’s not true. And we all know Alexi always tells the truth.

How can I subscribe to your newsletter, bluemeanies? That was the best, most complete answer I’ve ever received for any question I’ve ever asked anywhere! Thanks for enlightening me.
Hey Laurie, what would happen if the Galaxy lost Landon? I thought they’d be a top team this season once Sir Beckalot arrived, but would losing LD be disasterous?
