Catch Up on the Rapids
By: Clint | February 15th, 2007As this is the first post for the Colorado Rapids blog, let’s catch up a bit…
- The Rapids announced their new logo, unis, and team colors. A very nice, modern, and dare I say metropolitan look! Especially when compared with the “dinosaur font”/vomit color scheme used previously.
- In what must be one of the most fan-friendly openings to a press statement, the Rapids and Arsenal announced a… well… let’s just read what the team’s media release calls it: “The Colorado Rapids last week announced a groundbreaking commercial alliance agreement with perennial English Premier League contenders Arsenal Football Club. The establishment of the Arsenal Center of Excellence at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park highlights the alliance, which includes a combination of commercial and marketing efforts along with an exchange of best practices in a club-to-club relationship. The development of the Arsenal Cup, a club tournament that will be open to American club teams from all over the United States and that will be hosted at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park, was also a highlight of the announcement. Details of this tournament will be made public on a later date.” I like the idea of the Arsenal Cup (but the name has GOT to change. people in our county will show up to the stadium with their shotguns and a “huh? what’s a soccer?” look on their face), and the Arsenal Center of Excellence could be interesting. Maybe. Although, now that I think about it, our company has a “CoE” and it’s where we put all our junk that we don’t use any longer. Well, if nothing else, we’ll hopefully get to see a summer exhibition match between the Rapids and the Arsenal U-21 “B” team substitutes. That should be fun.
- Countering the LA Galaxy, the Rapids lucked out in free agency by signing Panamanian forward Roberto Brown. You know, Roberto Brown – “El Bombardero”. THE Roberto Brown – he who starred for such teams as San Francisco F.C. and FC Sheriff Tiraspol. Yeeahhhh, take THAT Galaxy fans!
- In news that is actual news, the MLS All-Star Game will be in Denver (well, Commerce City) this year. Thursday, July 19 (ESPN2 at 9 p.m. EST) is the date when the MLS All-Stars will play vs. Celtic, the runaway champions (yeah, I have a crystal ball) of the Scottish Premier League.

You realize that FC Sheriff Tiraspol is my favorite team in Moldova. Seriously. He scored in the Moldovan Cup a few years ago. Now I have a rooting interest in Colorado.
Welcome aboard.
