Dallas – Colorado Instant Analysis
By: Clint | June 23rd, 2007Well, another loss has proven a few things that had been a trend recently but are now just damned facts:
- Clavijo is, as we like to say in the office, having “issues”.
- Gomez is turning into Wayne Rooney. And I love it.
- Roberto Brown is averaging .7 fall-downs per minute played.
- Arturo Alvarez has amazing moves. He wasn’t getting much PT when he played for us (the Earthquakes, when I was a San Joser), but he shines brightest a few times a game now that he’s with them (Dallas).
- It’s Bouna Time! As if stopping a one-on-one with unreal courage (granted, it wasn’t the smoothest move by the attacker) wasn’t enough, the multitude of good-to-great saves he made throughout the second half was validation that he is not long for MLS. Despite my man-crush on Herculez, Bouna is the MVP of this team.
- I counted two positive plays by Beckerman. One was a chip pass that was lofted over the Dallas defense and the other was a late-game slide tackle that, for a change, was successful.
- Having Vanney back was great, but the offense is looking anemic. Cooke is playing the ball in well enough, but other than his crosses and Gomez (who I love in a more free role instead of sticking him along the sideline), there was some poor service (too many damn balls being passed to Sala for some reason), really bad decision making in the box, and too much hesitation. Was anyone else relieved to see Gomez turn around and immediately fire that shot in the closing seconds of the game instead of stumbling about the edge of the box until two defenders came and took the ball away – aka the only play the Rapids ran all night.
It’s tough to feel good about much after this game, but the positive takeaways I found were Bouna, having Vanney back, and Herculez. The negatives were, basically, everything else, including the insane heat all day today. It’s time to acquire a top notch scorer or target man and FOR GOD SAKES get Beckerman off the damn field. Trade him for Tom Cruise and put that weirdo midget in midfield and I’ll be happier than I am with the current situation.

I laid into Colorado pretty hard in my review of the weekend’s business. It’s kind of good to know I’m not the only one seeing a fairly flat team out there (some discarded comparisons of the Rapids’ play mentioned old people and sex, but I felt like the comparison was unfair…to the old people).
By the way, is there any sense that Clavijo’s job is in jeopardy?

Not really, unless you count fans’ opinions like http://wvhooligan.com/2007/06/25/mls-coaching-hot-seats/
I was shocked, SHOCKED, at how well the Rapids did early in the season considering Clavijo appears to be one of the worst coaches in the western hemisphere. He sounds nice on TV interviews, but looks, and coaches, too much like Fredo Corleone.
