Dick’s Sporting Goods Park
By: Clint | February 15th, 2007To paraphrase from Woody Paige, it’ll be interesting to hear the nicknames for this stadium.
Despite the rather unfortunate name, this sounds like a soccer fan’s dream scenario. It seats 18,000 which is enough to make finding a ticket easy, but still small enough to have good atmosphere and, I’m guessing, there will be great views from anywhere you sit. The stadium is part of a 360 acre complex that includes 24 (!!) lighted soccer fields, space for retail development, and of course the Arsenal Center of Excellence.
I haven’t been over to look at the stadium, but once it opens I’ll stop by and take pix.

Good to have any soccer stadium built. 24 lighted fields?! If I go to college in Colorado I’ll be quite happy.

Hi and welcome to the MLS Offside fraternity. Or whatever it is that we are. This is Laurie from the LA Galaxy Offside
Where are you in the Denver area? I grew up in Arvada and went to college in Ft. Collins.
And where exactly is Dick’s located? Here in Seattle [no, I don't live in LA] we have a great little iconic hamburger stand named Dicks. And after years in the area I still can’t hear, “Let’s go get a Dick’s” without giggling. Which is totally irrelevant, except that the stadium name is somewhat unfortunate. But it will stick in people’s memories.
And I swear that I will NOT say, “Crapids.” Ever. Well, not after this. (And I curse the person who put that word in my brain, because now it’s stuck there.)

I thought this one was obvious the minute I heard who won naming rights: it’s The Dick, as in, “Meet me at the Dick” and “Look for the Rapids to rock The Dick this Thursday!”
Truth be told, I’m jealous. I love the name.
And, yes, welcome to the MLS paages club.

Thanks for the welcome! Here is where The Dick is located:
although the photo for Google Maps was taken before groundbreaking, apparently. The 24 lighted fields seems insane, but I’ve met folks who grew up here and who immigrated (including a family of nearly 80 folks from Peru!) here who are addicted to soccer. This is quite different from where I’m from (San Jose, CA) where sports are barely a blip and soccer is nearly non-existent to folks over the age of 16.
I’m looking forward to some great signings of over-the-hill superstars this season. Here’s to the hope that Zidane signs for NY and I get to see a brother in baldness live this season!
