Is Anyone Watching the UEFA Cup Final?

By: Clint | May 16th, 2007

Does anyone even care about the NIT tournament of European club competition? I’m watching and continue to be impressed with how much more enjoyable watching a match with two teams from either Spain, Germany, or the Netherlands involved is compared with teams from Italy, England (though I love em, the style just isn’t as fun to watch), Mexico, USA, etc.

Of course people care about the NIT of European competition … the UEFA Cup is a great competition - it doesn’t get the respect it deserves.

I’m watching. Beautiful soccer in the style that made me fall in love with the French game. Slower yet pinpoint accurate, with the action coming in thrilling bursts rather than blast after blast.

I’m learning to love MLS style, I think, but I sure appreciate this kind of football when I see it.

(And the above comment makes it sound as if I don’t recognize that both teams are Spanish. I’m referring to French STYLE, not French TEAMS.) :-)

I understand completely. What I notice immediately when watching “continental” football is the appearance of the field itself. It looks like they are playing on a double-wide field due to the spacing, passing skillz, and lack of hard tackling/fouls. Watching the flow of the game is a welcome relief after a couple weeks of MLS-only viewing. Not that I don’t appreciate MLS for what it is, and more importantly, WHERE it is.

Come on Sevilla … Kanoute just doesn’t have his usual quality today - no finish at all from him.

FINALLY, Kanoute gets one in … from like three feet. Oh well, a goal’s a goal. Down a man, Espanyol looks done to me. Repeat for Sevilla!

Oh noes. Equalizer. Espanyol equalizes. Didn’t mean to turn this into a live blog, but c’est la vie. Oh noes. Penalties?

Holy crap what an ending. Can’t believe Espanyol pulled off the second goal.

Such a waste for Sevilla … Espanyol’s got to have the advantage now.

I haven’t been able to sit through a penalty shootout since World Cup. Let me know how it comes out.

PALOP with THREE STOPS. Sevilla wins and repeats as UEFA Cup holders … wow … I promise I’m done saying “PALOP with the stop” now. But it’s fun to say.
