LA Galaxy 0-1 Colorado Rapids
By: Kyle | May 27th, 2008This might be a bit much to infer from a game followed through a match tracker and audio stream, but here goes: I think the Open Cup game revealed a bit of sophistication that MLS has managed to develop in just 13 years.
Here’s why: how do you build a good soccer club? No matter your answer, the youth development system is key. Depth is key. And now, the teams who have done well with building depth are contenders. Does that mean we’re starting to see a little sophistication? I think it might; pretty good for a league that has been around a tenth as long as most others.
I bring up depth because the LA game proved the Rapids have it from what I could gather. Those were our backups facing the Galaxy (admittedly minus Beckham and Donovan). And not only did they hold their own but look at some of the names on our bench: Cooke, Ballouchy, Herculez.
As for the game beyond that: no comment. I listened to the call on the LA website, but that’s only so enlightening. To be honest, I was watching basketball while listening. And I hate all four basketball teams still in the running this year (Reasons: Kobe, Ginobili, the city of Detroit, and World Series revenge vs. Boston). A soccer game, or any game really, over the radio just doesn’t seem real to me. I have to watch the game or its just kind of a bust. All I could gather is that Colorado’s relentlessness continued, once again scoring first late.
In the US Cup, the next game for the Rapids will be against Kansas City next week on June 4. The traditional tea leaf reading method of deciding home field advantage in the US Cup will decide if Coloradans get to see it (that’s my guess. How do you think they decide?).
UPDATE: Wow, only fifteen minutes before the update. Because the match will be occurring under a new moon, the Wizards-Rapids match will be hosted by Kansas City according to the US Open Cup website. There probably isn’t going to be a radio call for that one.
