Prayer #1 Has Been Answered

By: Clint | July 17th, 2007

The Rapids have helped the worst team in MLS become even worse by trading Beckerman for Mehdi Ballouchy. I have no clue what Mehdi will be like (I don’t even remember seeing him on the field when we saw RSL play at the Dick), but he will be an upgrade (especially since he plays attacking midfield instead of void mid like Beckerman) AND he apparently went to Santa Clara U. Now THAT is something I know about since I drove past SCU 100s of times on the way to Cluck U. for lunch (and, in the 90s, to the gym to see Steve Nash play).

What is this pagan’s #2 prayer for the Rapids this season? Let’s just say it involves the manager and a one way airfare to Los Angeles.

Clint, I think RSL may have gotten the better of the deal on this one. I can only go by what I saw when your thugs came to play RSL. Beckerman can tackle and move the ball forward. Mehdi has some great feet but it never goes anywhere. Who knows? If he had a solid defense behind him he might have been able to attack. Just don’t hold your breath waiting to see him shoot and please pray that your manager doesn’t let him take corners!

Two players with equally bodacious hair. Call it an even trade.

I completely disagree. Kyle’s a great player. In case you didn’t notice Bob Bradley took him to the Copa. He may not be USMNT material but he’s good enough to get a look & as far as the MLS goes a very good 2-way midfielder. Kyle’s problem this year has been playing along Kirovski in the midfield. It’s like trying to judge a date when she drags a kid along. It just ain’t the same. Loose Kirovski and, viola, you have the Beckerman we had last year leading the team in shots, goals and winning a leadership award from the team.

This deal happened because Kyle told Clavijo that the Kirovski thing needs to end. Whatever you do, don’t cross Clavijo. He’ll ship you off.

I think RSL made out on this one. Beckerman is the better player without a doubt (95% confident).

Wow! That does NOT bode well for Colorado then. Maybe I’m spoiled from watching other leagues, but Beckerman looked horrific (both on TV and in person) in midfield. In the two games I cared enough to keep up, I counted 4 tackles, total, and 7 giveaways (not to mention a yellow card and several brutal tackles which should have been cautions).

I have to keep in mind the overall quality which is the standard (plus, seeing him next to Pablo may have made him look worse by comparison) in MLS, but what you folks are telling me is making me scared. Any chance Mehdi can be traded to Chicago for a dozen hot dogs and a slice of pepperoni?

I’m going to trust you guys as I wasn’t living out here and never sawr a Rapids game last season. That must have been one helluva transformation between last year’s Beckerman and this year’s.

I’ve got to side with Clint on this one… Aside from one or two games early on, Beckerman’s play has been fairly poor. He was unfortunately forced into playing as a set up man, someone that can finesse the ball and orchestrate an attack - That’s not his style which is why he’ll be better off in Salt Lake. As a defensive/holding midfielder he shows some great strength, but going forward and setting things up in an effective way, not so much. Occasionally I appreciated his skills but other times I wondered if it was more of a Rapids PR campaign to give the fans a skateboarding/dreadlock guy to associate with Colorado. Hopefully Ihemelu is next - Every time he touches the ball I cringe.
