Rapids Trash Talk?

By: Clint | May 1st, 2007

I need to get Ian’s take on this since I didn’t watch the game, but I found a few atypical quotes from Rapids players in a Denver Post article today:

“The reaction that comes out at the end was one of just pure joy,” said Mastroeni, who tugged at his shirt and gestured to the crowd. “We got a great result and we did it in a place where the (Real) guys are more worried about us taunting their fans than they actually are playing the game.”

“We like to send them home unhappy,” said Kyle Beckerman, who scored his first goal of the season, putting away a rebound off a free kick in the 75th minute. “They run their mouth the whole game. If their team is mad when we celebrate (a win), tell them to win the game.”

Now, I’ve only lived in Colorado for six months, but between my time here and the few times I’ve visited SLC, I just don’t believe anyone in either place is capable of talking trash. Did Kyle and Pablo say/do this stuff in an attempt to start up a rivalry, or were there actually fans at an MLS game who were getting into it with the opposing team (noticeable passion at an MLS game?? wow, maybe things are getting better!)?

    Clint,
I have to say that if I weren’t with my daughter last night, I would have thrown anything I could get my hands on (like many others did) at any of the rapids players! I hate Pablo and his sidekicks and like I said, if I were with different company I would have made a complete jerk of myself. I’ve got to find out where the visitors busses park for the next game.

Things really got rolling last year when the overly sensative RSL fans got upset over Pablo demonstrating they the Rapids had them in their pocket. Apparently any sort of motions below the shoulders in Utah are construed as some sort of perverse act and their owner acted like an angry teenager. He had his PR people working OT immediately after the incident and pumping out claims of which the worst the league said were false. Think of RSL’s fans as citizens of some 3rd world country. Instead of taking out their frustrations on their crap leadership (Checketts, Howes, Ellinger,et al.) they look for a scape goat to direct it at. CO’s their scapegoat but they really should get over it and fix up things at home.

My opinion is somewhere between Allen’s and Wiz’s. No, Allen, not everyone in Utah is an overly frustrated Mormon looking to silence all gesturing in the MLS and willing to toss something at your head if you show any joy at all. Relax. Wiz, that being said, threatening to do whatever you were thinking of doing to the visitor buses doesn’t exactly help me defend RSL fans. This is a rivalry, probably the biggest rivalry outside of LA-Chivas in the league, which is a good thing for attendances and fan bases and all that important stuff. But let’s not get out of hand - whichever side you’re on, the other side are not mindless huns - they’re football fans, like you, that get frustrated when their team underperforms. The Rapids players get a little bit of hypocrisy points for acting like the dislike between these two teams is one-sided and that their fans won’t be just as rabid when RSL goes to Colorado - they will be. It’s a great rivalry.

A great rivalry for the league. As long as no one gets hurt I think it is fun to have controversy like this.

This is awesome! Thanks for opening my eyes, guys. I didn’t even know Real Salt Lake existed until a few months ago, now I learn that some of my best friends went to school in a town filled with rabid, Denver-hating soccer fans (settle down, that was a joke!) - awesome, totally awesome!!!

This is what soccer should be about - hardboiled hatred of the enemy ; )
