Rapids vs. RSL for 56th Time this Year
By: Clint | May 23rd, 2007Tonight, the biggest game of the season is played, with millions of eyes transfixed on the action, and fans across the globe anxiously cheering on their team to what will be a glorious victory or a humiliating defeat.
And the Rapids will host RSL in some weird tournament match.
Now I know I’m not the most sophisticated, learned, dedicated MLS fan on my street, or even, possibly, the living room I now find myself sitting in. But it seems to meeee that “the oldest sports competition in the United States and among the oldest in the world” is something that should have been on my radar before today. I’m sure the second oldest sports competition involves chickens or something, so I don’t give that much importance to the age of this tournament, however, as Real Colorado is squaring off for the 56th time against the Salt Lake Rapids, it’s about time I picked up some edumacation about this historic competition.
To start (and end) with, let’s check out the Rapids history in this tournament:
1996: Advanced to semifinal round
Defeated: Kansas City Wizards (3-2)
Lost to: Rochester Raging Rhinos (0-3)
1997: Lost in third round
Lost to: Chicago Stingers (1-2)
1998: Lost in qualification round
Lost to Miami Fusion (2-3)
1999: Advanced to championship game
Defeated: Seattle Sounders (1-0), Tampa Bay Mutiny (1-0), Charleston Battery (3-0)
Lost to: Rochester Raging Rhinos (0-2)
2000: Lost in third round
Lost to: Richmond Kickers (0-3)
2001: Lost in third round
Lost to: Pittsburgh Riverhounds (0-2)
2002: Advanced to quarterfinal round
Defeated: Charleston Battery (1-0)
Lost to: Dallas Burn (0-1)
2003: Advance to quarterfinal round
Defeated: Kansas City Wizards (3-2)
Lost to: Chicago Fire (1-2)
2004: Lost in fourth round
Lost to: Dallas Burn (0-3)
2005: Lost in fourth round
Lost to: Minnesota Thunder (1-4)
2006: Advanced to quarterfinal round
Defeated: Real Salt Lake (1-0)
Lost to: LA Galaxy (3-1)
It’s fair to say Colorado would have had a difficult time competing in my nephew’s U-11 league most years, but this season is different. With Herculez behind the wheel, I’m fully confident we’ll be able to defeat the Rochester Raging Rhinos! Or, at least not lose by 3 goals. Maybe. As long as we play at home.

Actually tonight’s game is a qualifier for the USOC. If they win they’re in the USOC.

Aha! I just learned about it:
For the first time since 2002, all eligible MLS teams will not participate in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup tournament proper due to fixture congestion with international and club events this summer. However, each team will have the chance to qualify for the tournament. The top six MLS teams from the 2006 standings are being placed in the tournament proper, while the six remaining teams will play qualifying matches. The Columbus Crew, Kansas City Wizards, Real Salt Lake and Los Angeles Galaxy will play in the first qualifying round, with the winners facing the New York Red Bulls and Colorado Rapids for a chance to qualify for the tournament.
Thanks Allen!

I’ve decided to become something of an evangelist for the US Open Cup. It’s like the F.A. Cup/March Madness for soccer in America. Quite why the USSF and MLS do not market it better is beyond me.

Agreed, Tom. It’s a great tournament. It doesn’t stand in the same galaxy as the FA Cup, but it’s the best we have. Go RSL - if you’re going to roll over and play dead in the MLS, at least stay alive in the domestic cup.

So much for that, then …
