What the Hell Is Going On?

By: Clint | August 17th, 2007

I stop going to games and Colorado starts winning - no - shutting out opponents!

A 3-zip win over New England seems like a lie, but every web site reporting on the game that appears in the Google search results tells me that it’s true:

And, well, you get the point. Not exactly the New York Times or the Chicago Tribune, but at least someone at the Lexington Dispatch cares about MLS.

New old man for the Rapids, Tony Sanneh (boy, I remember when the hype for him was big, but that was about 40 years ago) came in for Dan Gargan after Garrrrrrs went off with an injury. Omar Cummings scored his first goal eva while Jovan kicked the other soccerballs into the goal-netting for a double pointer! YAAYYYY SOCCER! Actually, one of Kirovski’s goals was a penalty, which needs to start being counted as a separate stat as soon as world football statisticians get their act together.

I suck for not attending the game, but I may skip the next one as well if I get uber-suspicious and think it’ll result in another win. I hope someone who watched the game can explain this stat - the one that gives me the most hope and makes me think the game may not have been a fluke: the Rapids outshot New England 17-5. SEVENTEEN… toooooo… FIVE! Even I can’t find a way to mock that performance.

But what on earth brought this on? What changes have been made recently that would affect the team so much that they could shut out the two top teams in MLS? Um, getting rid of Beckerman? Makes sense to me.

The result was brought about by unholy alliances, Clint. Unholy alliances.

17-5 sounds exaggerated… I only saw two decent shots on target by New England. Somehow, in some way, our beloved Rapids were able to control the midfield, get in front of the defenders, AND manage to stop any Rev attack. I’m still scratching my head from this one.
