Where Is They Now? Junior Agogo
By: Clint | June 26th, 2007After being loaned out for years by Sheffield Wednesday, Agogogo moved to the MLS where he got into one game for the Chicago Fire before being traded to the Rapids in 2000. So let’s see. Failure to consistently make the first team at: Sheffield Wednesday, Oldham Athletic (while on loan), Chester City (while on loan), Chesterfield (while on loan), Lincoln City (while on loan), and the Chicago Fire. Not much for Colorado to expect in 2000, then, right?
Not quite. In 32 games, Junior netted 15 goals and was the top scorer for the club in 2000. I think we now realize the state of the Rapids, and by extension, MLS, in the year 2000. As part of their policy of getting rid of any and all decent players, the Rapids traded AgogoGadget to the Earthquakes in 2001 where he played out the season before being released the following spring. Junior was replaced on the Earthquakes by Devin Barclay, a guy who played for four teams in four seasons before being released for good.
Writing this is pretty depressing. It’s making me think no MLS team would survive a year in the Malaysian league, much less a season in England or Spain at the top level.
Anyhoo, Junior moved back to blighty and discovered his touch in 2002. Since his return, he’s played for Queens Park Rangers, Barnet, Bristol Rovers, and Nottingham Forest, scoring 69 goals in the process. Not bad for a guy cut by a team from my hometown (and, ironically, a team that was cut by my hometown, as well).
Junior has been playing so well lately that he’s been getting time with the Ghana national team (take THAT, Freddy Adieu).

A player is not just talent alone. A player is also a person – and in this case – that person (21 at the time) was a ridiculous drinker.
Junior always had talent – but he wasn’t exactly professional while in the USA.
I think what you’re missing is that when he went back to England, he perhaps started taking his chosen career seriously.
Of course over there he also was changed with sexual misconduct – which I think was dropped.
A model citizen he was not.

Ouch! Sounds like Junior should have played for the Bengals. Thanks for the background – I’m VERY new to Colorado and the Rapids, so posting on this site is half-catharsis/half-self education.
One thing I love about being a new Rapids fan is the atmosphere and great presentation of the team (marketing, new stadium, nice unis, etc.) – it lessens the pain of seeing them play so poorly half the time.
Since you’re probably a much more hardcore fan than I am, Mark, what is your opinion on the current roster and manager? Am I way off base in thinking that apart from 4 or 5 guys, this team does not have the right collection of talent to be a contender?
