You’re The GM: Strikers

By: Clint | July 6th, 2007

Alright, I’m now comfortable in the fact that I’ll never have as many comments as Chris G, but that isn’t going to stop me from striving for the top of the mountain. While watching my “old” team dismantle The Nie Red Bulls of New Jersey, I started thinking about what player my “new” team could use the most, regardless of salary, legalities, or reality. Well, one law would apply: time.

With this in mind, I tried to think of who I would A) want, and B) think had the best chance to succeed if he were to join the Rapids tomorrow. This means he would have to patrol not just the opponent’s goalmouth, but may be required to scoot back a couple of inches to an onside position since, other than Cooke, NO ONE on this team is going to be able to accurately get him the ball. He’d also have to be humble enough to realize Herculez is the star of this team, no matter how many goals the newcomer can produce.

And the wiener is… Samuel Eto’o. It came down to him, Rodrigo Palacio and Drogba, but in the end I wanted someone who (like Drogba) would get back and defend when necessary, could take the ball closer to midfield and join in the play when necessary, and most importantly, did not come from Chelsea.

I figure for every position on the field, most people would take one of a handful players every time, though a little depends on who else your team has (for example, once the Galaxy has Beckham and Landon - at least for now - wouldn’t a Van Nistelrooy or David Villa make more sense?). Anyhow, Eto’o’s my man and yes I just had to find a way to make his name possessive somewhere in this post.

If I can keep this going, I’ll do attacking midfielder next, then left winger, right winger, defensive (or central, is possible) midfielder, left back or wingback, right back or wingback, centerback, sweeper, and keeper. For now though, I’ll be waiting for the Eto’o to the Rapids rumors to start circulating (don’t worry, I brought a bedpan and a lifetime supply of donuts with me to the couch).

Eto’o is a solid one man team, but at this point I’d have to go with Messi. All he needs is to get the ball at the half and he’s golden. Maybe even his own box in MLS.

Tell Kroenke that instead of buying Arsenal he should just spend 150m on Messi.
